O grupo tem revelado informações inéditas sobre aspectos ligados a diversidade, biogeografia e ecologia de primatas da Amazônia Ocidental, gerando informações para subsidiar ações de conservação. Dentre os principais resultados originados por pesquisas do grupo, estão o registro de novas ocorrências de espécies e delimitação de áreas de distribuição geográfica, monitoramento populacional (incluindo de espécies ameaçadas), uso de primatas por populações locais, além de aspectos básicos em biologia e ecologia, como estrutura e uso do habitat, efeitos da sazonalidade sobre o comportamento e dieta.
Primatas da Amazônia
Das cerca de 150 espécies conhecidas de primatas encontradas na América do Sul, 60% estão na Amazônia brasileira. É nesse lugar de biodiversidade riquÃssima onde o Instituto Mamirauá desenvolve pesquisas sobre a ecologia e conservação de primatas.
De olho nos macacos-de-cheiro
Para pensar estratégias de proteção ao macaco-de-cheiro-de-cabeça-preta, os pesquisadores do Instituto Mamirauá realizam vários estudos sobre a espécie. Eles acompanham, por exemplo, as populações de macacos, para ver se elas se mantêm estáveis, isto é, mais ou menos com o mesmo número de indivÃduos, ao longo dos anos. Felizmente, entre 2009 e 2013, constatou--se que sim, o que mostra que a reserva cumpre seu papel de proteger as espécies que a habitam.
Outro aspecto investigado atualmente pelos cientistas é a disponibilidade de alimentos para o Saimiri vanzolinii na região durante as diferentes estações do ano. Eles verificaram, por exemplo, que, nas épocas de cheias, o macaco-de-cheiro-de-cabeça-preta come mais frutas do que insetos ou aranhas.
